Gilgit Baltistan

Gilgit Baltistan Parks and Wildlife Department introduced trophy hunting program with the involvement of the community of Bar Valley in 1990.

Trophy hunting of Markhor, Blue Sheep and Ibex is permissible in the Gilgit Baltistan (Pakistan), subject to such rules and regulations as are provided in the Gilgit Baltistan Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation, and Management) Act, 1975. The hunting of Markhor , Blue sheep and Ibex is otherwise prohibited under the general ban imposed by the Govt. of Pakistan and their hunting in Gilgit Baltistan is allowed, as a special case, only in the Community Managed Conservation Areas.

The Trophy Hunting Initiative is a source of revenue for both the locals of the Community Controlled Hunting Areas (CMHA’s)/Community Managed Conservation Areas (CMA’s) and the supervising government department.

Presently, 47 CMHA’s/CMA’s have been notified in Gilgit-Baltistan.

 

Hunting Areas in Gilgit Baltistan

 

  • Sakwar /Jutial/ Barmas

Spread over an area of 75 Sq Km, this hunting haven contains the species of Markhor, Ibex, Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, and Wooly Flying Squirrel.

  • Kargah

Kargah, spread over an area of 254 Sq Km, provides to be the habitat for Markhor and Snow Leopard. It also boasts to be an archaeological site. 

  • Sai Juglote

Sai Juglote is situated some 45 km east of Gilgit and is spread across an area of 326 Sq Km, boasting to be home to the mighty Markhor and Ibex. 

  • Haramosh

Providing to bet he habitat for Markhor and Ibex, Haramosh covers an area of 60 Sq Km in the south-central region of the Rakaposh-Haramosh Mountains.  

  • Danyore

Danyore is spread across an of 483 Sq Km and provides the habitat for Markhor, Ibex, and Snow Leopard. 

  • Bagrot

Spread across an area of 482 Sq Km, Bagrot valley is home to Ibex and Snow  Leopard. 

  • Harali

Harali covers an area of 406 Sq Km and is home to Markhor, Ibex, and Snow Leopard

  • Ramanji

Ramanji serves to be the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Sikanderabad/Nilt/Jafferabad

The vicinity is spread across 50 Sq Km and is home to Markhor, Ibex, and Snow Leopard.

  • Bar (Nagar)

Bar covers an area of 906 Sq Km and is home to Snow Leopard and Ibex.

  • Gulmat/Minapin

Spread across an area of 210 Sq Km, this CCHA is home to Ibex, Markhor, and Snow Leopard.

  • Hoper/Hisper

Hoper/Hisper is spread across an area of 1153 Sq Km and is home to Snow Leopard and Ibex.

  • Hushey

Hushey is situated in the Khaplu district of Skardu division and spread across an area of 583 Sq Km.  Hushey is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • kanday/Sailing

Spread across an area of 105 Sq Km in the Khaplu district of Skardu, Sailing is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • Nar/Ghoro

Spread across an area of 116 Sq Km, Ghoro is home to Urial, Ibex, and Snow Leopard. 

  • Hussainabad/Goal

Goal is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard, and is spread across an area of 130 Sq Km. 

  • Qurumber-Ghizer

Qurumber is spread across an area of 647 Sq Km and is the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • Yasin-Ghizer

Spread across an area of 165 Sq Km, the community controlled hunting area is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Ishkomen-Ghizer

Covering an area of 115 Sq Km, Ishkomen is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Sherqilla-Ghizer

Spread across an area of 65 Sq Km, the hunting area is home to Ibex, Markhor, and Snow Leopard. 

  • KVO

Covering an area of 650 Sq Km, KVO is home to ibex, Blue Sheep, and Snow Leopard.

  • Shimshal

Shimshal, situated in the Gojal Tehsil of Hunza District, is home to Ibex, Blue Sheep, and Snow Leopard and is spread across an area of 168.3 Sq Km.  It also boasts to be the highest settlement in the district. 

  • Khyber

Spread across an area of 323 Sq Km, Khyber is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Bunji

Bunji is home to Markhor, Urial, Snow Leopard, Ibex, and Musk Deer.

  • Doyan

Doyan serves to be the habitat for Markhor and Snow Leopard. 

  • DMT

DMT is home to Snow Leopard, Ibes, and Markhor. 

  • Pairishing-Astor

Spread across an area of 220 Sq Km, the area is home to Ibex and Musk Deer. 

  • Gorikote/Tarishing

Covering an area of 181.3 Sq Km, Gorikote provides to be the habitat for Musk Deer, Ibex, and Snow Leopard.

  • Rupal

Rupal is spread across an area of 524 Sq Km and is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • kalapani

Kalapani covers an area of 650 Sq Km and is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • Buar-Gini

Buar-Gini covers an area of 798 Sq Km and is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Basho

Basho serves to be the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • Ghulkin

Ghulkin is a settlement in the Gojal Tehsil of Hunza district and is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. The area is spread across 103 Sq Km. 

  • Hussaini

Hussaini is spread across an area of 55 Sq Km and is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Passu

Passu is spread across 80 Sq Km and provides to be the habitat for Ibex, Blue Sheep, and Snow Leopard.

  • Misgar

Misgar is spread across 956 Sq Km and provides to be the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Gulmit

Gulmit provides to be the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Chupursan

Bordering Afghanistan and China in the north-most part of Gilgit-Baltistan, Chupursan provides to be the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Shinaki

Spread across an area of 233 Sq Km, the Shinaki vicinity is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • Darel/Dudushal

Spread across an area of 886 Sq Km, Darel provides to be the habitat for Snow Leopard and Ibex. 

  • Khanbari

Doyan serves to be the habitat for Markhor and Snow Leopard. 

  • Hudur

Hudur is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. It covers an area of 404 Sq Km.

  • Khinar

Spread across an area of 326 Sq Km, Khinar is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • Thore

Covering an area of 315 Sq Km, Thore is home to Ibex and Snow Leopard. 

  • Tangir

Tangir covers an area of 1171 Sq Km and is home to Markhor and Snow Leopard. 

  • Thak-Niat

Covering an area of 533 Sq Km, it provides to be the habitat for Ibex and Snow Leopard.

  • SKB

Spread across an area of 1598 Sq Km, SKB is home to Markhor and Snow Leopard. 

 

Hunting Seasons

 

The hunting season for Markhor, Ibex, and Blue Sheep continues from 1st November till 31st April. December and January are most suitable months for trophy hunting of Markhor and Ibex in the mountains of Gilgit Baltistan . Number of hunting days in the hunting field are specified separately according to the type of permit availed.

 

Hunting Permits

 

The Gilgit Baltistan Parks and Wildlife Department, on behalf of the custodian communities offer trophy hunting permits for Markhor and Ibex by inviting open bids each year for the ensuing hunting season through advertisement in the leading national news papers. Such advertisement usually appears in the month of September. Hunters and experienced outfitters are invited to send their bids to Chief Conservator Parks and Wildlife, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. The bids are received in the department in the 1st week of November and the successful bidders are notified in the 2nd week of November. Highest bidder is given preference for issue of permit followed by second highest bidder. In the event of a Tie, the permit is given on a first come first served basis.
